wishing everyone a good festive season and fair winds for 2009.

we planned to go sailing as the forcast was for 8knts, however when i arrived the launch trolley wheel had gone flat and i had no charge in my air pump. The new catrax trolley will be used next time as this is proving a pain.

i had to recover a few items from the kit box anyway so it wasnt a total wasted journey.
also it gave "LT" my van a test ride. It drove ok apart from the usual sunday driver syndrome, also because it was so cold we had good wheel slip going up spread eagle. a feature of the van is awd
it lets the driver know when the drive wheels are slipping on ice and snow etc. comforting to know that every journey is going to be a little safer.

AUTUMN 10
Spud Mutley & Dave

still suffering from the flue, forcast wasnt good until early sunday morning when it was forcast to drop from 30knts + on the saturday.
i did not travel and spent time sorting the van which had to be emptied after the season was over.
dasterdly was moved to a more secure spot and all the kit stowed away, so not a wasted day.

Hopefully a few trips out in the off season will be on the cards, to get ready for a better 09 season.

wind forecast was 18- 22 knots and building SW winds. everything looked calm until we launched and got past the pier. after finding where mark 1 was we did a beat until we got to mark1, we were surprised by some of the gusts which almost hit us over. rounding 1 we reached across to 2 and the sea was surprisingly lumpy. i struggled to gybe and when we did i lost control completely. heading back to the start line was really lumpy and waves were breaking. we were getting hit and the spray was coming right over the bows into our face, at times i couldn't see. i said to Dave,
i don't like this and we would try one more gybe and then decide if we were going to race at all. we went around again and had another scary gybe. ok that's it were not racing. we had been out over 30 Min's in total. we headed back in . many boats were going over. i felt happy with my decision and tommy tipper also didn't start.
If it's not fun then its no fun trying to just survive. I'm glad i went out, but I'm glad i came back.
Today marked the 2nd year of owning mutley. I've not done so much racing this year for obvious reasons. IE weather. and a few mechanical problems early in the year. lets hope next year 2009 is much better and we have a more fuller season than 2008

GENERAL SAILING

well not a good start to the day when i found a flat tyre on the launch trolley.
then no cup race at all, dave showed for 11am and we headed out expecting a slow sail.
weather for the cup race would have been dreadfull, we tried making our way to ballard and old harry but could see it would have been very slow. broad reaching was best toward pevril direction. and also beating back. we sailed for 1h 30 approx, to say there was no wind was untrue, at one time we healed over to the point of going over. dave then decided the wire was best from now on.
only rolo was at at this time and then bruce followed. we headed back in pleased with the sail we had. a few pints and a nice meal in the white horse followed. a fantastic day for october, it was cold over night and foggy.

dasterdly and mutley

dasterdly is my laser #191089
i sail dasterdly when i cant get crew for mutley.
i started sailing lasers at shearwater sailing club in 1997 and then bought a dart 15 #1616 "currant affair".
i sailed the dart from 2003 at swanage sailing club untill 2007, when i then bought mutley a hurricane 5.9 cat #192 this is the biggest cat you can get for club type sailing, it takes alot of skill and experience to sail one fast, the handicap is 691, which is the fastest handicap at the club. 2007 was a learning year with mutley. i couldnt sail the boat fast enough. in 2008 me and dave roper my crew improved alot and gained a 2nd place in a series race during the autumn 2008 series.2009 promises to be another good year hopefully if 2008's progress is anything to go on. this blog will keep u informed on my sailing, the ups and the downs the high's and the lows.

POOLE BAR BouY
MUTLEY SPUD & DAVE 14 MAP
A light easterly and a nice sunny day.
We left the beach last and got to the start
with a few mins to go. In the brief mike said
those going to the pin end will have bad wind
and lose out, so everyone was at the committee
boat and chaos ensued.
I reached down the line and started by the
pin. Got a good fast start and off we went
into clean air. We went right under the cliffs
and then tacked out in front of henry. We did
this afew times and then we retook the lead
going by old harry. The wind picked up and
they hoised the kite and left us, we wanted to
round the mark first but alas it wasn't to be.
We rounded and then did another bat back home.
The sea was now lumpier and the bows were
digging in a fair bit. We re-caught henry and
did cat and mouse with them to overtake.
Finally going into the bay we headed straight
to white elephant and henry hoisted the kite
again, we were neck and neck all the way home
and henry just beat us across the line. We
were really pleased to have been right at the
front with a spitfire. Overall finished 10th
3rd from 9 cats. All boats were very close on
handicap and anyone could have got the top
places

AUTUMN 3
MUTLEY SPUD & DAVE 13
Wind was expected to be very light. After
repairing all the breakages from the knoll cup
race, we finally launched into a fairly
changing wind. The course was short and the
start line busy, we got to the line early and
decided to go pin end and go left, we made a
fantastic start coming underneath Richard and
mike with enough speed that we hit the line
first, then we heard calls of don't luff up ,
mike was frantically saying we were luffing
them. SORRY i didn't know i was. We carried on
and got to mark 1 in 2nd place. Going from 2
to 3 was the key leg and we didn't really know
how to tackle it. We tried a few different
things each lap. We didn't really make any
mistakes this week. Dave had a scare each lap
when i tried to get him in the committee boat
while he was out on the wire. At the end i
said “i only wanted to know what our laps
time’s were, i though you could have looked
over and seen them” (haha)
We lapped Richard and then seen greg in front.
Dave said “theres our next target”, i didn't
expect to catch him but we did rather easily,
the waves were choppy for some reason and we
could see him being battered, we didn't suffer
so much from that because the hurricane cuts
thru them.
We didn't catch martin but we didn't get lapped by mike either.
Overall we were very happy with a nice sunny days sailing which
made a change. 2nd on handicap best ever
result for mutley

After a rough pratice sail before the start,
we got under way making good ground to mark
number 1
We rounded ok and then after another tack to
make the 2nd mark BANG dave was gone again
Lightning does strike twice in the same place.
The cleat had broken again and dave went for
another swim, this time i couldn't get to him
as i couldn't turn the boat as the jib is
normally controlled by the crew. I ended up
making mark 2 wider as i shouted for all to go
around me Finally i got the boat around and headed
toward dave, i wasn't close enough and i had
to get a jetskier to come over and get him for
me. With dave aboard we reflected on what had
happened And sailed home. With the boat packed away
everyone else came in too. The race had been
abandoned due to boats over and drifting
marks. We were lucky it had happened and lucky
to survive 2 breakages that we hadn't
encountered before. MUTLEY was giving us a
hard time saying come on i need looking after.
New bits were ordered so hopefully it wont
happen again

AUG 23RD
KNOLL CUP
MUTLEY SPUD & DAVE 11 MAP OF RACE
For the main race the wind increased and the
sea was choppy. We started well behind the
line and almost went along the line everyone
else was on port. We tangled with one laser
that tacked ontop of us
We then got underway and got to the mark 1 in
fairly good position.
We headed for 2 and then gybed straight for
ballard . We waited until the last minute
before mwe gybed out to sea. We were 3rd on
the water by this time and only the groome and
clark spitfires were ahead with the spinikers
flying. We gybed once more near old harry and
then again to get inside mark 3 and onto the
bar bouy, we rounded in about 22mins or so and
the had to find the finnish. After a few tacks
we found watanga and went over the line. 34
mins Heading straight back for swanage we
encountered plenty of chop on the beat , so
much so that on hitting one wave dave had
enough and left me to sail back on my own. I
looked around and thought “what the hell” i
uncleated the jib and drifted back to where
dave was. The cleat for the trapeze had
broken. We got back ok and had a few pints to laugh it
all off.

Wind was lighter then that for the main race
we rounded the mark in 48 mins broad reaching
most of the way accept for when we got into
the next bay.It was then a hard beat all the way home and
the wind was increasing. We went all the way
to pevril and tacked for hom

MUTLEY SPUD & DAVE 9
Wind was 12 knts gusting more before we
launched We set off early to get some time on the
water, going from 3 to 4 we were surfing very
well. We did many gybes to make sure we were
ok. At the start we were late over the line.
By mark 1 we were 4th
Only to lose it on the next lap when the wind
altered and we hit mark 2.
Not done many 360’s in a race on a car before.
Adrian rounded the mark so we knew we were now
well down. We re overtook and left them all.
It was a hard race for us and i could see dave
was struggling
It was good fun and we did some good beats,
the main coming un cleated gave us both a
scare and almost an early swim. We live to
fight another day. It shows that time on the
water does count. We were a little rusty but
nothing that cant be worked on. Map of race

AUGUST 2ND
REGATTA
R1
SPUD & DASTERDLY
The regatta was well attended and many people
not sure what to rig as the wind would be
increasing all weekend. Expected 12 to 20knts.
We sailed out to the north east mark and the
wind was building all the time
The start was hectic and boats were going
over. I started about 30 secs late as i didn't
have a proper race watch. The first beat was a
sign of what was to come. I couldn't keep the
boat flat at all, however i wasn't last in the
laser fleet. Going from 2 to 3 was challenging
knowing the gybe was very soon. I played safe
by spinning the boat around 360. carnage
ensued as one laser had been holed avoiding
another boat that had gone over. Boats were
going over like nine pins
Downwind to 4 was fun and i was gaining
ground. The next beat was harder again and i
did 1 dry capsize. Then around mark 1 i went
over yet again, his time getting a good
soaking, and losing my water bottle too. I
carried on and went to 3 and gybed ok . Then
onto 4 and bang over i went, the boat seemed
to head up and then flipped the other way
throwing me at least 20 ft out the boat onto
my back . When i looked up the boat was
drifting away and i had to swim for all my
worth, it looked as though i wasn't going to
get it when i grabbed onto the submerged mast
and then pulled myself in by the sails
The centreboard was out as well so i had to
rest myself on the boom and feet in the
cockpit to put it back in. I righted the boat
after a while and then found the main trapped
around the rear of the boom and i had to
untangle it in what was becoming an very rough
sea state. I carried on another few hundred
meters and the same thing happened. Feeling
tired i decided to give up, i had wanted to
just finnish the race as many didn't . I
sailed back in to be greeted by many stories
similar to mine and some nursing badly damaged
boats. After a few pints my aches were slowly
subsiding and we enjoyed the fireworks. With
the prospect of stronger winds Sunday i had
already packed the boat away for a swift
return home

Sailed for 2-3 hrs and went to poole bar bouy.
A greek cargo ship was anchored so we sailed
around that to see what it was. Bournmouth was

The wind picked up on the return leg beating
all the way home overtaking many yachts
Wind in the bay was really fresh. When we got
back we discovered it was 6pm WOW what a day
plenty of sailing and totally lost track of
time. I slept well after the barbeque and
fireworks
I never heard the 2nd track from the live

We were released from duty, the weather was light and forcast to build
It was good to be sailing again in conditions we liked. We launched at 10.30 to get some pratice in, the line was very biased to the left so a pin end start was key and going to the left of the course as well.
We reached down the line and my watch want in sync with the committee boat as i heard them counting down as i went by. I powered up straight away and go tover the line really well
Henry sailing with Mark shot into the lead and mike chem. Went right ??
We rounded mark 1 in 2nd place and chased mark for all our might on after 2 mike overtook and then took the lead. We still chased mark and upwind we eventually did get close. We tacked early and it was a mistake as we lost ground to them. We followed for a few laps until they made some mistake going to 3
We rounded the mark just behind and then powerd over the top of them to no 4 holy moly we never overtook a spitfire before that wasn't capsized. We rounded 4 with great delight, unsure when to tack for the line we waited to long and missed beating them to the line by 2 secs.
After a long spell of not sailing mutly i can honestly say that was the best sail me and dave had ever done. Well done dave everything gelled when it mattered. Thanks to greg Vaughn for letting us sail.

SPUD & CLUB LASER
Wind was still blowing for the afternoon and only 9 boats signed on.
Laser radial seemed a good choice to just go out and have a go.
Off at plus 15 i had along race ahead. After launching i just took it steady rounding the old pier , when i got to the new pier i had my first capsize, luckily i t was a dry one, then a bit further after tacking the main got caught on the transom and this time i went for a swim.
After righting the boat no problem i then sailed out to the start and rob baker was there as well, we only just made it.
The sea was choppy and blowing , i had a job to see even with sun glasses on. When the gun went it was a struggle to get the boat going, i had to have the sail out as if i was on a reach ON THE BEAT !!
Eventually i made mark1 and the onto mark2, it was so slow i decided to give up, the boat wasn't handling very well at all and was full of water in the cockpit. If i had been on dastardly it may have been alot better, however the wind would still have been blowing

Wind was blowing 18 to 22 knots prior to the start. I was apprehensive about starting and was told the wind would drop. We rigged and was almost last of the beach. We encountered some trouble on the first tack and started sailing backwards. Then we noticed a trapeze wire hooked around the mainsail batten high up. W e sailed to the start and tried to get ready.
We were on the wrong side pin end when the gun was about to go we reached down the line spun the boat around and went into irons just as everyone was starting duh !!!
We got away and only lightly powered it up we rounded 1 ok and the got ready to go around 2 thinking it was a gybe , i was unsettled and it showed in my desicions.
We got ready to go around 3 , we gybed and i was totally out of control, the boom snapped over and i could have gone with it. Alan was unaware i was out of control and did his job well.
We got to 4 and said enough i wasn't happy . We sailed back in to shore.
I don't retire very often but when u get spooked u tend to ere on the side of caution. I sail to enjoy myself and to me this wasn't fun at all. Saturday was fun as i liked the lasers. Sailing a cat in the same conditions to me is totally different, something ive not yet really mastered

SPUD & DASTERDLY (LASER)
Thinking the race was going to be a light wind race, i wast prepared for the wind that suddenly picked upto 20knts ++
AFTER A POOR START at the pin end i crossed the start line dodging capsized boats
Wind was strong and couldn't keep the boat flat at all. Mainsheet kept getting tangled also and had to stop on lap2 to clear it. The course was triangle sausage and going thru the gate both times.
Some forgot !! Gibing was scary and on the last triangle went for a swim. I was trying to follow mike greenleaves as best i could and rob baker behind. I managed to recover from the total inversion and got going again to complete the final sausage. I finished 10th from 22 that started. And only 6 mins behind the winner on handicap. I ached and had bruises Saturday night. An early night was the order of the day. DASTERDLY HAD HIS DAY

Wind was light and eastley weather the day before was hot and hardly anywind
Today was the chance to try out the new rudder , we agreed it was in the correct position and headed out early (1020am) to get some extra sailing. After not being able to lock the new rudder down we had to return to shore. Then we were off to pratice the course, we noticed the tide was running strong after we headed to mark1. so we worked out where we had to be for the race and how we would start
From 2 to 3 was the problem as the wind wouldn't tae us dead down wind.
We had a good start and beat mustt across the line, we went to the left and all the other spitfire all went to the right. At no 1 we were all about equal and we headed further out to see to reach in allowing for the tide. It sort of worked but we didn't gain. Going form 2 to 3 was as bad as we expected and we said we would go to the middle next time. 35 mins to do 1 lap. On lap 2 we gained on mark and by the time they tacked we were right on them, going from 1 to 2 we gained again and rounded 2 about the same
From 2 to 3 the hard bit we followed each oth closely, however we expected them to pull away with the spinnaker advantage. They didn't and we beat them to mark3 and shadowed them again going to 4 we pulled up on them on the beat and when we tacked i messed it up and they pipped us to the line.
And good race for me and dave as we hadn't raced for a month. Light wind racing is never easy , i think on this occasion we did fairly well. A good end to a good weekend

Shearwater v Bristol avon sc GILMER TROPHY DAY 1
A short trip to bath to sail on the river avon nr saltford.
W e were greeted by a pile of doughnuts and the question was , was it to weigh us down in the race as there was no wind. 16 boats competed in very little wind , the locals seemed to do better on the very narrow river. Race 1 was shortened due to the lack of wind as was race 2. racing was close and fun and knowledge of the rules was key about overlaps at the marks.
We all sat down to a good spread at dinner time and went out for extra sailing when the wind did appear, however it went before race 3 im not a light wind sailor and followed the fleet home for the last race. A barbecue followed the racing and everyone enjoyed the day. However shearwater sc was well behind in the pts going into day 2 at shearwater for the Sunday races. After checkin for damage from the last sail nothing seemed apparent until we were reaching across the bay, i commented to alan the steering was heavy and we stopped the boat to check the rudders. Nothing jumped out at us and we carried on. We worked our way to the outer limits of the bay and alan said shall we go to poole marker, not alot of wind was showing and i though was it wise. After heading further out to sea we picked up more wind and we then turned for the poole mark.
Rounding the mark we raced into knoll beach with plenty of wind, we stopped on the beach for a break and again checked the rudders. We left with lots of wind and enjoyed our sail out past old harry to again be greeted by no wind. We headed ou to sea and then picked up more wind. We changed course and eventually got back into swanage bay, where there was plenty of wind, helming was hard and commented once more it was really heavy.
Once ashore we checked our rudders with Jason
and sure enough the starboard rudder was out of align.
A new rudder was ordered complete ata cost of £462 !!

We carried on and saw them only just behind from 2 to 3 , a few mistakes by me helming all most cost us a capsize as the boat veered to the left when on starboard reach, pulling a muscle in the process, we carried on. The winds and built up more and the gusts increasing. We got back to the old pier and said hello to the uprights as the starboard rudder popped it self up. Dave quickly held the boat from scaping the old beams and we managed to get away. We finished 6th a good result for our 2nd race of 2008

Mass start on a downwind start not such a good idea as all i heard was up up , im sure some weren't called for but we got away clean dodging a few lasers. Went right and got some good wind after following martin. Who then went on port early. We made it to the downwind mark in 3rd and only 2 spitfires in front closely followed by mark and desney on 016 spitfire. With light winds and the odd gust we kept our cool and stayed infront of them, however on rounding the 3rd mark we decided to carry on and dave forgot to unclip the jib sheet while on the reach. He undid it while out on the wire and then went for a ducking as mutley suddenly slowed and went to leward with us on the same side both of us scrabbled to stay on the boat, we recovered and carried on, we went far right and made some ground up on 016 who had overtaken us while we were swimming. When we then went onto starboard for the next mark we went past mark as though he were stopped and kept ahead to the end, however not a minute in front of them, we enjoyed the race very much and had a good battle too.

SPUD & DAVE MUTLEY 23
Wind was light and changing, we launched and decided our way would race, however it didn't work.
We went left because of the tide and it didn't pay off because the wind dropped on the left side.
We picked our way through the queue for the mark and then off we went chasing everyone down from the rear of the fleet. The wind picked up and by mark 1 again we were in 3rd position on the water.
Now being happier we pulled all the stops out and started lapping many boats.
We were also catching up to big thing but time ran out and were about 15 to 20 secs adrift.
With light winds getting us back into the shore we snagged a line and we did not know,
We were going nowhere until I noticed we were caught up. After a beer and discussions on how well we caught up with mark , we checked the results to find indeed we had done well our first ever 3RD place.
Our best result on mutley for sure, it’s a shame the season is ending so soon

NO SAILING NO WIND
SPUD & DAVE MUTLEY 22
However we did launch as the cancel signal came just as we were launching.
We reached across to sheps hollow a few times, wind was light and dropping to nothing.
After 45 mins we decided to head for home.
TODAY MARKED OWNING MUTLY FOR 1 YEAR.
We have had lots of fun and learned to sail him much faster than we could originally.
Nothing major has happened apart from 1 capsize in choppy conditions. That was due to poor boat balance when tacking. On handicap we did not do well at all, but on reflection we are sailing better and that can only get better. My aims for 2007 have been achieved in away as I have mentally improved sailing the boat compared to the dart 15. I am more confident and dave has been a great help with his crewing and trapeze experience.
With two races to go in the 2007 season for me and Dave we have come along way both learned the boat and improved weekly. In 2008 we must show further improvement by sailing more to our handicap
Mutly is a good boat and has been very good to us, thankfully he didn't get to bite us !!!

23RD SEPT
Autumn s3
SPUD & DAVE MUTLEY 21
With a storm predicted to hit around 1pm and freshening winds we launched at 10.15 to get more practice in. we went around the course as it was being set to work out our strategy.
At the start we got to the pin to early and had to tack to port to avoid being totally in the wrong spot. We had many shouts of starboard and we knew we had to give way, some seemed concerned that we were doing a port flyer but I knew to hold station and then get going.
We rounded the windward mark in 5th and then tried holding off a strong 18 fleet.
We weren't doing so well this week as Greg overtook us and Chris haw.
Maybe the survival mode was switched on or mutly just didn’t want to play today.
We caught Greg up and left them behind only to have a near pitch pole between 3 & 4.
We were screaming along and not letting off only heading up we stated to dig in and then Dave decided to do some hull dancing until the bridle wire said otherwise, meanwhile I headed up and stopped the boat, Dave meanwhile had gone for a swim still on the trapeze. We recovered ourselves and continued.
We caught Greg again and Chris haw and left them behind, Chris capsized.
We were lapped by Henry and almost by graham and mark did an extra lap also.
We had fun but handicap wise, oh well !!
We raced to survive this one and I think we achieved it just.
Sometimes its not about the racing its just going out and having a good battle,
no matter how far down the fleet you are.

Commodores cup
Greg & spud Dart 18
With very little wind predicted and only 11 boats entering, I crewed for Greg on his dart 18 for something different to do. The ledge was very tame thank god as 3 laps were planned to round it. We spent the whole race chasing boats from the back of the fleet , the spitfires were way ahead and so was bill McMillan. We finished behind him and finished a strong last on handicap.
Just proves its not only me that can finish last

16TH SEPT
Autumn S2
SPUD MUTLEY & DAVE 20
We launched at 10.30 to get some extra time sailing
CHOPPY AND GUSTY with that feeling it was going to be a hard race.
With some marks not able to be used we were confused as what the course was, setting my watch late did not help either. So we decided to follow the spitfires, or try too.
A traditional triangle course was set with mark 2 set out to sea which we did not spot originally.
After a reasonable start we headed of the windward mark toward pevril direction, the waves suddenly became very choppy and the boat was getting swamped and us too !!
We gybed and headed into the middle of the course and then gybed again.
We soon caught Patrick and followed closely until the last lap we outwitted them going to mark 2 and led them home although they beat us on handicap of course. A good tussle we all agreed.
Some of the gybes were a bit frantic but we live to tell the tale.
TOMMY TIPPER LOST THE HELM OVERBOARD !!!!!!!!! His crew said after, I wouldn’t have gone back for him if he hadn't held on !!!

2ND SEPT
FUNRACE #7 SERIES SUMMARY
SPUD& DAVE MUTLEY 18
We launched an hour before to practice what we should be doing !!
We played the outhaul in the gusts and it works .
Race was getting lumpy and wind increasing, with a slow start we got to the mark in about 4th, and Greg rounded first, however we then overtook and got to 2nd place 15 secs behind the chem spitfire.
We followed close and went starboard off 2 chem went port
We came out just behind, next time we lost ground on the same spot and then did the same the following laps, the chem spitfire capsized and we took the lead with Henry close behind.
We went thru the line in 1st something I have never done at swanage ever. We got to the mark and tacked too early letting Henry lead, we could never catch up the distance we lost and then looked to see where the chem spitfire was, going thru the line we had to endure 1 more lap and we both said oh no chem is going to gain on us now, however it wasn’t to be and we finished 3 mins ahead. A good weekends sailing and were both tired as a result

Crews race
Sailed for over 2hrs prior to race with Ian truss 16
DAVE & SPUD
Somebody warn me to increase my life insurance next time Dave helms
Joking aside with increasing winds and a strange course set, Dave had to learn fast, the crew had never trapeze on the boat either and was seen over the side a few times in practice. Course was 1-2-3-2-3-4
3 laps. All I can say is I survived !!
Dave did well for his first lumpy race, more practice needed
Came 6th from 6 and 12.5 mins behind 3rd spot on handicap so not to bad

27th Aug
CHELLINGWORTH CUP
SPUD & ALAN KNOWLES MUTLEY 15
My good friend Alan of the mirror wanted to try the cat out to see how it was done.
After a bad launch where the boat decided to go without anyone on board, we decided to stay out and Alan did the race with me. We launched at 10am and we were off at 11.46. So we did plenty of sailing
With tactics in mind we knew how to do the race and a good start to beat Jason was key. We rode over the top of him from behind very easily an d left him, we then were catching the 3 spitfires until they hoisted the spinnakers. They were then nowhere to be seen, we then caught Greg on the next lap and Nigel at the next mark, again the tide was key and we made good use of it, we finished 16th from 20 on what was a dying wind which was bad for late starters, the monos were going thru the line as we started, so they had 46 good minutes of wind.
Alan enjoyed the race and sail.

26th Aug
Practice race
During single man race
SPUD& DAVE MUTLEY 14
Well it was supposed to be a single man race, however I decided to do it 2 up and do it for the hell of it. Wind was light and the tide was running strong. After launching dave took over the helm, we practiced until 11.30 then the race started, with dave still helming !! We got to mark 1 fairly easy going on port across the whole fleet except the spitfires.
We then lapped the whole fleet before they made it to mark 1
We did 3 laps of a big course, dave did very well in very light winds and tides pushing us back , we used what skill we have to stay 4th on the water and stay on lead lap. As it didn’t count we retired at the 4th mark as it was near the club. Well done dave. We sailed for the full 2hrs + an hour before the race.

12TH JULY
FUN RACE
SPUD& DAVE MUTLEY 13
Well light winds were expected like the day before, however after launching we soon got to the start rather fast, after the prev training about starts and mainsheet we reached across the line a little to early
We gybed with 16 secs to go and started late again!!
We spent most of the race catching greg, who was solo. We tried our best and went for good boat speed rather than sailing the course. We made up ground and overtook greg. However mistakes by me dropping the mainsheet instead of letting of slightly dropped us back.
The wind picked up to to a f5-6 and we heeled over many times.
We sailed much better then before and the change was noticed by greg who finally pipped us on the line, by this time the sea was reasonable choppy and about 17knots. Oh and it was daves birthday
Happy birthday Dave, if I had known he definitely would have been dumped in the drink when I saved it haha !!!

29th JULY
SS8
SPUD & DAVE MUTLEY 12
After a heavy night the night before I wasn’t really looking forward to this race. We launched into a very gentle shifty wind. I messed the start up by tacking within a minute of the start and then swept backwards by the tide. Once started 3 mins late over the line we soon got to the mark but cleverly carried on and reached to no 2 without having to retack.
We got to 2nd place in the fleet with this trick and lost it all into a hole off mark #2
We then did the same again on lap 2 and regained lost spots, however the fleet were only just behind so we lost on handicap big time.
Apart from that a good sail what could we have done
without the mistakes

JASON & SPUD
HURRICANE 5.9 048
WELL THIS RACE WAS DONE TO HELP EACH OTHER,
RIGGING AND TRAPEZING AND RACE TACICS.
WITH LIGHT WINDS AND A DOWN WIND START WE DIDN’T DO VERY WELL AFTER ROUNDING THE MARK OFF OLD HARRY WE THOUGHT A PINT IN THE BANKS ARMS WAS A BRIGHTER PROSPECT. ON THE RETURN JOURNEY WE HAD A ROUGH RIDE WITH CHOPPY SEAS, THE LITTLE PROBLEMS WITH THE BOAT SHOWED AND WE GOT BACK TIRED AND FRUSTRATED HOW HARD IT WAS. I LEARNED A FEW THING S WHAT ITS LIKE TO CREW ON A HURRICANE AND SEEE THE PROBLEMS THE CREW ENCOUNTER. FROM MY VIEW ITS KNOWING WHAT THE HELMS DOING IS WHAT COUNTS.

7th JULY
POOLE BAR BUOY RACE
SPUD MUTLEYAND DAVE 10
Another sunny day for the poole bar bouy race.
The start was delayed due to a spitfires mast breaking.
We timed the start ok for once and went around the mark in 5th then
going by adrian d15 upside down on a choppy reach, we timed our gybe
well as the waves were hitting the boat hard. We then broad reached
under the cliffs almost broaching at one point, we headed out to sea
and were overtaken by greg, we then later overtook blasting into the
poole mark. On the return beat the effects of the tide then hit us
again and we lost valuable time. We finnished in 46 mins but last but
one on handicap. However we sail to enjoy ourselves not where we
finnish on handicap. We sailed well for our experience on the boat,
and its only the 2nd time ive done this race anyway.
We were happy and it was all caught on film (swearing as well) :))

24TH JUNE
SPUD MUTLEY & DAVE 9
Well the rain kept me awake during the night and we got rained on
during the race. The sea was still lumpy like Saturday
We got to the start line and started with the fleet 10/10
Then rounded #3 in 2nd place only to be overtaken by the whole fleet
because spud forgot what to do after rounding the mark ??
We caught up and passed the 15’s and then had some scary gybes almost
losing dave over the side. Overall a good race we live to tell
another tale

23RD JUNE
BOURNMOUTH RACE
SPUD MUTLEYAND DAVE 8
Somebody tell dave to take over the helm lol
Well not knowing what a postponment flags and then going off for a
jolly we started well behind the field, messed up the first tack yet
again. We rounded the mark and went on a run or was it a reach to the
cliffs at ballard, then gybed and went out to sea doing about 10 knts
overall. Surfing some big waves we eventually came to the bournmouth
mark. We rounded and then got absolutly soaked by hitting every wave
we had surfed in on. We made staedy progress overhauling steve little
john , we then decided when land was to small to see we would come
back inland to be slowed by the tide. We cross tacked around old harry
with chris haw and battled with them for along way, outwitting slj we
got to the finnish in 2hr 6m
Taking 1hr and 4 mins off last years time on currant affair (D15)
After many pints of ringwood in the whitehorse to wash the salt from
our throats I retired to a very heavy sleep ready to do battle on
sunday
=================
17TH JUNE
SPUD MUTLEY 7 DAVE
Greg said wind is good AND FLAT
It was anything but flat !! Waiting for the start we got into
trouble by not being able to tack. After a few attempts we got the
boat going. After reaching down the line we were ready to turn for the
line when again we stopped
6mins late goin over the line , we got to the mark and hit it
And the whole laser fleet had to go around us drifting backwards. We
then did a 360 and carried on.
Now not wanting to tack for fear of stopping again we carried on and
finally I worked out why we were messing the tacks up.
So after saying to dave what I had done wrong we carried on and
enjoyed the rest of the race , we did good beats and
downwind legs.
I hope I remember for next week what I did wrong this week

20TH MAY
SPUD MUTLEY DAVE 6
After a postponement and sunshine everyone launched in light winds,
praticing the start the wind died and then the 3 minute warning , oops
we were on course side, we went downwind as best we could making for
the committee boat only to find a que of cats about to head us off, we
managed to get in line and off we went about 2mins down. We made good
progress upwind to round the mark in 4th !!, that’s where we stayed
keeping mark and mike a few mins infront, a few tweaks here and some
freshning winds we finnished, pleased we hadnt gone
backwards from “the big thing” we use this as our guide to where we
should be position wise. Hopefully next time we may do even better

6TH MAY
SPRING SERIES
SPUD MUTLEY 5 DAVE
Well the day got off to a bad start. Then strong winds prior to the
start told me it was going to get worse. Leaving the shore we found
many things wrong with the boat. Having to stop to alter them out near
the start line we found it impossible to get the boat going again, the
trampoline was very slippery after repair and then I found myself
sliding down when the boat powered up and over we went, oh well we had
to get help from swan 4 and after tipping the mast we were ok and
sailed back in no problem, disappointed is an understatement, having
capsized mutley for the first time was a relief as nothing major went
wrong. We live to tell the tale or tail lol
